Hire a car with a professional driver for the road trip from Karachi to Lahore, or from Lahore to Karachi, door to door. The drive is about 1,200 km on the M-9, the N-5 and three motorways. It is easiest over two days, with a night in Sukkur or Multan.
The M-9 motorway runs out of Karachi past Bahria Town, Nooriabad and Jamshoro to Kotri, across the Indus from Hyderabad. From there the N-5 National Highway runs about 300 km through Hala, Moro and Khairpur to Sukkur. This is the one stretch that is not motorway. From Sukkur, the M-5, the M-4 and the M-3 are motorway right into Lahore.
Sukkur is about 470 km and six and a half hours from Karachi. Stop there and the second day is about 740 km, nearly all motorway and roughly eight hours of driving. Stop in Multan, about 885 km out, and the first day runs to around 12 hours. Lahore is then only 343 km away, about four and a half hours on the M-4 and M-3. With small children or elderly parents, take three days, with nights in both Sukkur and Multan. No day then runs over six and a half hours of driving.
The M-9 has few proper service areas, so plan a first break around Hyderabad. On the N-5 the towns come close together. Hala, about 62 km past Hyderabad, is known for kashi pottery and the shrine of Makhdum Nuh, and further north stands Kot Diji fort. The M-5 has 12 service areas and 10 rest areas between Sukkur and Multan. The M-3 has service areas too, and its Nankana Sahib interchange is the turning for Guru Nanak's birthplace.
In May and June, start early so the N-5 is behind you before the afternoon heat. From December into January, fog over Punjab and upper Sindh can slow or pause motorway traffic. The motorway police advise driving in fog only between 10 am and 6 pm, and helpline 130 gives live road and fog updates. A winter trip is planned with the motorway hours in daylight and time in hand.
For one person travelling light, a direct flight of a little under two hours is quicker; the fastest trains take around 17 hours. The road suits a family or group with luggage: you travel together, stop where you like and keep the car in Lahore.
Over two long days, legroom and boot space matter most. Up to four passengers ride comfortably in a Toyota Corolla Altis Grande or Honda Civic. A family of six fits a Toyota Prado, and seven ride in a Toyota Land Cruiser. Larger parties travel together in a Toyota Grand Cabin, with its passenger layout confirmed, or a Toyota Coaster 4C, with its current 22-seat listing. With every seat filled, the bags decide whether a larger vehicle fits better.

About 1,200 km on the usual route. Route planners give 1,190 to 1,220 km between the city centres, depending on the exact start and finish. The old N-5 route through Bahawalpur and Sahiwal is longer, at about 1,271 km.
About 13 to 14 hours of driving, or 15 to 17 hours with meals, prayers and fuel stops. That is why we plan the trip over two days.
Yes. A one-way drop to any address in Lahore is quoted the same way as a return trip.
Yes. The driver collects you anywhere in Lahore or at Allama Iqbal International Airport and takes the same motorways south, stopping overnight in Multan or Sukkur. If you fly out of Jinnah International at the end, give the flight time when you book and the last day is planned around it.
Per trip, not by the day: the quote covers the car and its professional driver, including his meals and room for each night away. Fuel is paid per kilometre at the quoted rate or by refilling the tank at the end of each day, and motorway tolls are extra. Days you keep the car in Lahore are added to the same quote, using that vehicle’s booked city-duty hours.
Payment is by cash, bank transfer, card or online, or on a company's monthly invoice. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and a replacement car is sent if yours breaks down on the way.
Yes. Islamabad is 375 km up the M-2 from Lahore, usually four to five hours. Send the whole plan when you book and it is quoted as one trip, with one car and one driver from start to finish.
