Around Muzaffarabad with a car and driver
Muzaffarabad's streets climb and wind, and places to stop are hard to find. The driver drops you at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, a government department or a relative's house, and waits while you go in. Islamabad to Muzaffarabad by the Kohala road
From Islamabad the usual way is about 130 km and roughly three and a half hours. It runs past Bhara Kahu, up the Murree Expressway and down through Lower Topa to Kohala. The last 40 km follow the Jhelum on the S-2. Weekend traffic near Islamabad and Murree, fog, rain and winter weather can all add time, so we build a margin into the pickup time. From Islamabad International Airport the drive is about 160 km, and from Abbottabad about 80 km.
Pir Chinasi and the Red Fort
Pir Chinasi, a hilltop shrine with views over Muzaffarabad, is about 30 km east of the city. The vehicle for the climb depends on your dates and the road conditions. In town, the Red Fort, known locally as the Rutta Qila, stands on the Neelum River.
Rent a car for the Neelum Valley: Keran, Sharda and Kel
Keran is about 90 km up the valley. Dowarian, about 106 km, is the start for Ratti Gali Lake by local jeep and on foot. Sharda, with the ruins of Sharada Peeth, is about 130 km. For travel beyond Sharda to Kel or Arang Kel, discuss the onward route and any jeep or walking stages for your dates. Your quote sets out how the jeep legs to Ratti Gali or Kel work. For the upper valley we usually suggest a Prado or a Land Cruiser and at least one night away. Whether a saloon suits depends on how far up you go and the month.
Weddings, family visits and longer stays
