M-1 motorway route
The six-lane M-1 passes Fateh Jang and Sangjani, Burhan near Hasan Abdal, Swabi, Rashakai and Charsadda, then the Peshawar Northern Bypass and Ring Road. Burhan connects to the Hazara Motorway, and the Swat Motorway branches from the M-1. There are ten service areas, five on each side. Traffic leaving Islamabad or entering Peshawar can add time.
GT Road stops
The N-5 runs through Taxila, Hasan Abdal, Attock Khurd, Jehangira, Nowshera and Pabbi. It is slower than the motorway and suits stops at the Taxila museum and ruins, Gurdwara Panja Sahib or the view of Attock Fort. The fort remains in army use and is viewed from the road beside the Indus.

Start from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Bahria Town or Islamabad International Airport, about 25 km south-west of the capital near Fateh Jang. The airport connects directly to the M-1. Peshawar destinations include Hayatabad Medical Complex, the University Campus on Jamrud Road, Islamia College, the Cantonment, Saddar and Bacha Khan International Airport.
Return to Islamabad
The driver collects you in Peshawar and joins the M-1 at the Ring Road. Your journey can end at an Islamabad or Rawalpindi address, or Islamabad International Airport. For a departure, send the flight time so the pickup allows for traffic and check-in.
A day or several days in Peshawar
A return leaves time for a meeting, hospital appointment or family visit while the driver waits. During a longer stay, stops can include Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Mahabat Khan Mosque and Sethi Mohallah. The old city is easiest on foot, with the driver waiting at its edge.
Onward to Swat or Abbottabad
The Swat Motorway leads to Chakdara for Mingora, Malam Jabba and Kalam. At Burhan, the Hazara Motorway leads to Abbottabad, Mansehra and the Kaghan valley. Abbottabad is about 190 to 200 km from Peshawar, under three hours. At Islamabad, the M-2 continues 375 km to Lahore.
Choosing a car and timing
A Toyota Yaris or Corolla suits a small party travelling light. A Toyota Prado suits a family with luggage; a Grand Cabin can carry a family group, with the layout confirmed. Larger parties can ask for a Coaster or bus. In monsoon rain, allow extra time on the city roads. For an onward mountain drive, the car choice depends on the route and season.
